Background of the Study
Climate change is a global phenomenon characterized by significant alterations in temperature, precipitation patterns, and other climatic conditions. Its effects have been particularly felt in agriculture-dependent regions, where shifts in climate can lead to food insecurity (Saidu et al., 2024). Kebbi State, located in northwestern Nigeria, is predominantly agricultural, with many of its inhabitants relying on crop farming for their livelihoods. However, the state has recently experienced more frequent and severe climatic disruptions, including prolonged droughts, erratic rainfall, and rising temperatures, all of which have negatively impacted food production and security (Ahmed & Numan, 2023). These climatic changes exacerbate vulnerabilities in food systems, affecting the ability of farmers to produce adequate and reliable food supplies.

The agriculture sector in Kebbi State primarily focuses on the cultivation of crops such as rice, maize, and millet, which are highly sensitive to changes in temperature and rainfall patterns. Climate-induced stresses such as flooding, droughts, and heatwaves are becoming increasingly common, affecting both the quantity and quality of food produced. These disruptions threaten not only food availability but also the stability of food prices and access to sufficient nutrition, especially in rural communities where food security is heavily dependent on local agricultural production (Olokoba et al., 2024). The complex relationship between climate change and food security in Kebbi State calls for a comprehensive investigation into how these changes influence food systems and affect the health and wellbeing of the local population.

This study aims to assess the impact of climate change on food security in Kebbi State by examining the relationship between changing climatic conditions and agricultural productivity, food access, and nutrition. It will explore the coping strategies employed by farmers and communities, as well as the role of government and other stakeholders in mitigating the effects of climate change on food security.

Statement of the Problem
Food security in Kebbi State has been increasingly compromised by the adverse effects of climate change, including unpredictable weather patterns, reduced agricultural yields, and rising temperatures. While there is growing awareness of the role climate change plays in food insecurity, specific data on its impact in Kebbi State is sparse. This gap in knowledge hinders effective policy development and the implementation of appropriate adaptation measures to safeguard food security in the region.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity and food security in Kebbi State.
  2. To identify the coping strategies used by farmers and communities to mitigate the effects of climate change on food production.
  3. To evaluate the role of government and other organizations in enhancing food security in the face of climate change in Kebbi State.

Research Questions

  1. How does climate change affect agricultural productivity and food security in Kebbi State?
  2. What coping strategies have farmers and communities in Kebbi State developed to adapt to the impacts of climate change on food security?
  3. How effective are the policies and interventions implemented by the government and other stakeholders in mitigating the effects of climate change on food security in Kebbi State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Climate change has a significant negative impact on agricultural productivity and food security in Kebbi State.
  2. Farmers in Kebbi State employ adaptive strategies to cope with the effects of climate change on food security.
  3. Government and organizational interventions have a positive effect on enhancing food security in Kebbi State in the context of climate change.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on agricultural communities in Kebbi State and assess how climate change affects crop production, food access, and nutrition. Limitations include the challenge of isolating the specific effects of climate change from other factors influencing food security, as well as potential difficulties in obtaining accurate and up-to-date climatic and agricultural data.

Definitions of Terms

  • Climate Change: Long-term alterations in temperature, precipitation, and weather patterns that affect ecosystems and human activities.
  • Food Security: The state in which all people have access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and preferences.
  • Coping Strategies: Measures or adaptations taken by farmers and communities to mitigate the impact of adverse environmental factors, such as climate change, on food security.
